Is Welcoming but not Affirming Possible?

One of the best discussions over the topic of Christianity and homosexuality can be found at Eugene Cho’s blog as he responds to Dan Savage of the Stranger. Unfortunately the discussion on Savage’s blog (Slog) is not as insightful as the conversation on Eugene’s blog. Too bad. Scot McKnight also deals with the question, “Can we love the sinner but hate the sin?”
Bo – Greetings. Got here via DJ’s blog. i too think that the conversation on Eugene’s blog about this has been meaningful and faithful. While I land in a different place than he does, I truly appreciate his approach and posture of ministry. To address questions, at a certain level you can, but at some point one must decide whether or not homosexuality is a sin. After that, deeper postures about how we accept/tolerate/welcome one another can be dealt with.
My post spurred on by this is: http://www.reyes-chow.com/2007/07/a-christian-per.html

Hi Bruce. Sorry for the delay in response – on vacation and w/o internet (I’m not into Blackberrys). I agree. I believe that the majority of those posting on Eugene’s blog assumed the Scriptures to teach homosexuality to be sinful whether they themselved believed that or not. I don’t like the slogan, “love the sinner, hate the sin” because it implies that the sinner is the “other.” What the conversation demonstrates is the difficulty how to address this topic if (and this point is oftentimes forgotten) “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom 3.23).
